Don earned his B.S. in 1960, from WVU, and his M.S., 1962, also from WVU. He earned a Ph.D. in 1965, from Iowa State University. After finishing his Ph.D. at Iowa State University, Don returned to WVU as an assistant professor of statistics in the College of Agriculture and Forestry, and was later a professor in the Department of Statistics and Computer Science. The Donald F Butcher scholarship in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Engineering honors his contributions.

He was co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of Software Valley Inc., in Monongalia County, and was the author of numerous professional articles and was a member of several regional and national professional associations.

Dr. Butcher was born June 29, 1937, in Parkersburg, son of John Franklin and Anna Pearl Hersman Butcher, of Circleville, Ohio. Mrs. Butcher now lives in Greenville, SC.
