Donald F Butcher served on the WVU faculty from 1965 until 1997. During much of this period, from 1972 until 1994, he chaired the Department of Statistics and Computer Science. (Mal, was he the first chair of CS?) This period saw the growth and development of this new field of study at WVU, and Don was the leader of the development.

Don earned his B.S. in 1960, from WVU, and his M.S., 1962, also from WVU. He earned a Ph.D. in 1965, from Iowa State University. After finishing his Ph.D. at Iowa State University, Don returned to WVU as an assistant professor of statistics in the College of Agriculture and Forestry, and was later a professor in the Department of Statistics and Computer Science. The Donald F Butcher scholarship in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Engineering honors his contributions.

He was co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of Software Valley Inc., in Monongalia County, and was the author of numerous professional articles and was a member of several regional and national professional associations.

Dr. Butcher was born June 29, 1937, in Parkersburg, son of John Franklin and Anna Pearl Hersman Butcher, of Circleville, Ohio. Mrs. Butcher now lives in Greenville, SC.
