Raymond is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. He attended West Virginia University and received the BS degree: in mathematics in 1968.
Raymond Lane is a participating partner of the venture capital group Kleiner, Perkins, Caulfield & Byers, in Menlo Park, California.
Mr. Lane was president and Chief Operating Officer of Oracle Corporation before retiring from Oracle in 2000. He spent ten years with IBM in various product management and marketing positions and later was Division Vice President at Electronic Data Systems Corp. He then became Sr. Vice President at Booz-Allen & Hamilton where he pioneered and led the Information Systems Group, a worldwide consulting practice targeted at helping senior management achieve better results from information technology investments. He also served on the board of directors and the company's executive committee.
Mr. Lane has recently been elected to the Academy of Distinguished Graduates at WVU. He serves on the Board of Trustees at Carnegie Mellon University, the Board of Directors for Special Olympics International, Marimba, Inc., and Software Technologies Corporation. He holds an honorary Ph.D. from Golden State University and he is active in Bay area civic activities.
Ray Lane, a man from working-class roots in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, became a Silicon Valley icon but he never forgot his alma mater - WVU.
Ray graduated from Moon High School, located near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After receiving a mathematics degree in 1968 from WVU, he was recruited to IBM, and spent 10 years in various product and marketing roles. During his tenure at IBM, he entered the military service during the Vietnam conflict and served two years in the U.S. Army with the 1st Infantry Division. After leaving IBM, Ray worked for EDS, Ross Perot’s company, as a division Vice President, taking him to Texas.
Ray then was then recruited to the prestigious management consultant firm of Booz, Allen & Hamilton where he spent 12 years, and led the global technology practice. He also served on the firm’s executive committee and board of directors.
In 1992, Ray was recruited to be the President and COO of Oracle Corporation, the second largest software company in the world. There, he led a turnaround, and spearheaded the growth of Oracle into a global powerhouse.
After leaving Oracle in 2000, Lane served as a Managing Partner with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, a leading venture capital firm, and after 14 years, founded his own firm known as Greatpoint Ventures, which he leads today.
Lane states, “over the last 25 years I have had the opportunity to become more involved in West Virginia University, funding The Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering and also funding the Lane Innovation Hub, a maker’s lab for all engineering disciplines at WVU, both of which my wife Stephanie and I are very proud”.
Lane didn’t stop there; he became the national campaign committee chairman for the WVU Foundation's "Building Greatness" capital drive. He was also asked by Governor Manchin to join WVU’s Board of Governors. Lane said he feels fortunate to have worked in the technology field for 40 years and wants to give something back to a place he still holds dear, WVU. Lane has also invested a significant amount of time and resources with his father’s university, Carnegie Mellon University. There, he led the Centennial Campaign while he served on the Board of Trustees. In 2009, he was asked to chair the Board of Trustees and did so until 2015. At Carnegie Mellon, Ray and Stephanie Lane funded one of the first Computational Biology Centers in the country. Today, the center has grown to a full department in the School of Computer Science and grants PhD’s, Masters and Undergraduate Degrees in Computational Biology.
Lane was inducted into the WVU Academy of distinguished Alumni in 1997 and was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by Golden Gate University in the same year. In 2001, he was awarded a Ph.D in Science from West Virginia University. Today, he serves on the board of directors of Carnegie Mellon University (as a life trustee) and the board of Special Olympics International. He also serves on the public boards of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Beyond Meat.
Ray and his wife reside in Atherton, California. Their son RJay attended Carnegie Mellon for Computer Science and resides in Colorado. Their daughter Tori graduated from WVU in December 2024 with a BS in Integrated Marketing and Communications. They visit Morgantown frequently, and have an additional home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
