Dr. Roy S. Nutter, Jr., received three degrees from WVU: the BSEE in 1966, the MSEE in 1968 and the PhD in 1971. From 1972-74 he was with National Cash Register's Accounting Computer Division where he designed microprocessor based systems. In 1974 he joined the EE department faculty where he has used his knowledge of microcomputers in both teaching and research. He has received the WVU Researcher of the Year Award in 1988-89, College of Engineering's Outstanding Researcher Award in 1988-89, 1984-85, 1983-84 and 1982-83, the Outstanding Professor Award in 1984-85, and the College of Engineering Faculty Leadership Award in 1990.
Dr. Nutter has been an untiring advocate for increased WVU computing capabilities for both students and researchers. He is an expert in mine monitoring and control, in mine safety evaluation, and in mine automation. He is an active Ham Radio Operator and is interested in repeater systems and in packet radio communication systems.
Dr. Nutter served as a Board Member and an Officer of the IEEE Neural Networks Council 1985-1993. This more recently has been referred to as Artificial Intelligence. He also served as the WVU Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Chair from 1990-1996.
In 1993, he was named an IEEE Fellow for "the introduction of microprocessor and advanced computer technology to applications in the mining industry." He was a founding faculty advisor to the College of Engineering Hybrid car project in 1991 and was the faculty advisor to the WVU Formula Lightning Electric Racing Team from 1994-2015.
He was a member of the WVU Faculty Senate from 1998-2021 and Chairman 2001-2002. He served on the WVU Board of Governors in 2001-2002 as the faculty representative. Spending considerable time in Charleston, WV, he also served as the WVU Faculty Representative (and two years as Chair) of the WV state Advisory Council of Faculty as part of the State Higher Education Policy Commission from 2006-2021.
Following the 9-11 incident, Dr. Nutter developed several graduate courses in cyber security for graduate students. This has evolved over time into the department’s Cyber security degree programs. Dr. Nutter was founding board member of the National Cyber Forensics Training Alliance, NCFTA, a non-profit corporation that provides critical cyber services for the public private entities of the USA.
As a licensed Professional Engineer, Dr. Nutter has also done considerable consulting work related to microprocessor controls and in radio communications for underground coal mines.
Following his retirement from WVU in 2021, Professor Emeritus Nutter has served as the Chief Technical Officer of a local “start-up” company, Fourth State Energy, a part of ATfTT LLC.
